bright hot Neon

Love me some astrobrights paper and neon ink!

the first 3 are from 2019. I used one of my fave homemade folded pens and some fluorescent pink acrylic ink (Daler Rowney). I love how it showed up neon orange though on the yellow paper.

I just love this. Her named turned out great and I love the swirls as well as the white accents.

And on top of it, I had this stamp that matched! (unplanned happy accident!)

Did this insert to match. Same folded pen.

For Chuck's I forgot what pen I used, as I did them at different times. So, for his, I used a different folded pen. Still homemade, but bigger and diff. metal. I like how Janet's turned out better.

Then, I did this next one for Janet for Cinco de Mayo, 2021:

Again, love the brightness of it.

Then, a little more themed on the back.

Care Card to Jean

Sent a special card to Jean. Because of my P&I ig posts, been using my Horizon folded nib a lot lately. Love how her name turned out with it.

Great happy accident here (with the stamp), as I initially used this teal ink to match the card (below). And when looking through my stamps, cannot believe I found this pretty one with teal in it!

Before stamp and addressing.

I bought this card years ago, prob. at an arts & craft show, and it was plain, so I just added the lettering on top. Was tricky to do because of the background texture, so my "Thinking" didn't turn out so well. (Used a small homemade folded pen; first with pearlescent ink, then switched to white.)

P&I Post 8 (Last one!), Same for both

Used the same pic & description again for both my & PI's posts.

Made a collage pic showcasing the styles, inks and tools I demonstrated for the week (plus a few others). Clockwise, starting with green Thank You:

1) Pilot Parallel Pen and folded nib (Ecoline ink and drop-in watercolors).

2) "Arigato" -- Folded nib, alternating thick and thin letters. Red India ink.

3) Script "Thanks" -- Ruling Pen with Walnut Ink and drop-in pearlescent watercolors.

4) "Merci" -- Ruling Writer with dual inks. (This time I started with one color then added the other.)

5. "Grazi" -- Zig Fudebiyori metallic brush markers. Although you can't get fine lines, these markers can still be manipulated the same as a folded pen.  They are wonderful for dark papers as well as slick surfaces, and they won't smear!

I had such a fun time with this, and hopefully, someday can do another Takeover Week!

Post 7, Dual Color Technique

I did the same post for both my & P&I's page.

For video, either check out my IG:  https://www.instagram.com/p/CR9G0zrAxif/

P&I's post:  https://www.instagram.com/p/CR9DvXyLyLa/

P&I Blog (scroll):  https://www.paperinkartsblog.com/2021/08/10/ruling-and-folded-pens-with-leslie-from-olovey1/

or my YouTube Channel:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndivMabnp_k

The video is a demo of dual colors, showing how using 2 at once can result in a unique effect. This is a fun technique, but can be tricky at times!

With my Ruling Writer, I add the 1st color to one side, then another color on the other. (For a folded pen that only has one opening, it mainly works by using one color first, then adding the 2nd.)

Finished sample.

Still pic showing how I load the ink.

Happy Accident. Was trying this technique a few years ago and when wiping my pen to get the extra ink out, i made it into a "V". (used plum & teal for the colors)

Both these letters made with a handmade folded pen (shown) using blue & green pearlescent acrylic inks.

Post 6 (my IG acct., Snail Mail)

I made extra P&I env.'s ("generic") vs. just to Sarah.

Not quite happy with how they turned out, as it's a bit hard to letter!

Used my Horizon folded nib for both.

Link to my IG post:  https://www.instagram.com/p/CR6hxL0HAZj/

Hot pink Astrobrights env. Love how the Innovation stamp matched.

This started out with me just playing around trying to letter "paper & ink arts", and it wasn't turning out, so I made into a handmade env. (Strathmore paper)

Backside (or if you open up the whole thing.

Post 6 -- Snail Mail! (P&I)

From P&I post:  I’m having such a fun time taking over the Paper & Ink Arts page this week! So, to show my appreciation, I created a few Thank You envelopes, as I’m a snail mail fanatic. I love to letter names big (if they fit), but it’s also fun to make a matching card and envelope set. I previously posted about making abstract designs with folded pens, and for snail mail, when I’m stuck on how to letter a name, I sometimes decorate the envelope instead. Then, it’s fun to make a card to match. Swipe to see a few samples, as well as a Christmas creation with the same idea.

env. & matching thank you card. Blue India ink with RW.
Love how the heart stamp goes so well. (love those stamps!)

Abstract design using RW & walnut ink (with drop-in colors).
Also added some 3d gems.

Another abstract design with folded pen. Love the color combos of yellow, white & teal. Plan to use the heart stamp. Could also add any lettering on the card ("hello", "Congrats", "Happy B-day", etc.)

Abstract trees with green India ink and RW. *A demo video was requested, so be on the lookout for that come Nov/Dec! (Will probably post to my YouTube channel as well:  https://www.youtube.com/user/1FabMum/videos )

Post 5 (both me & P&I), various samples

For my page, i only used the first photo, then referred viewers to my P&I post.

This post is a sampling of styles with 3 different pens. Clockwise from top: 1) & 2) Horizon folded nib, 3) ruling pen, and 4) Ruling Writer.

New alpha exemplar using RW.

Another exemplar with Horizon folded pen.

Lastly, gestural script exemplar with ruling pen.

see comments below regarding this.

This post includes different alphabets and lettering styles with the various folded pens I’ve discussed so far. Swipe to see samples.
.
The “gestural script” sample (last pic) was a bit of a happy accident. I was practicing with my ruling pen and must not have rinsed out all the pearlescent ink I was using. When I went to use walnut ink, this is how it turned out! (*Note: If you want to get this effect while lettering, put a little metallic ink in the pen first, then add other ink – or vice versa. More on this technique later…)
.
*Also, a note on cleaning your pens: Be sure to rinse well and dry thoroughly after each use. Depending on the ink (especially acrylic or metallic inks), I may also clean them with a little Windex and/or a toothbrush. If ink does tend to build up on them, soak in some white vinegar (for at least an hour), and that does wonders!

*Check out the P&I blog (you'll have to scroll) to see their layout of all my pieces. (I would take a screen shot & post here, but it won't fit on the screen.) -- https://www.paperinkartsblog.com/2021/08/10/ruling-and-folded-pens-with-leslie-from-olovey1/

Post 4 (P&I), Ruling Pen

Only 1 pic for this post!

Made this last year (2020). Was just playing with my ruling pen and i like how it turned out, so I made it into an insert/card.

Here is yet another abstract design made into a card. For this I used a ruling pen (another product available at P&I). Just like the Ruling Writer and folded nib, you can manipulate this tool to get thick and thin lines. Also, like a Ruling Writer, (but UNlike a folded pen), you can adjust the opening by turning the screw. Personally, I prefer a narrower opening, so I can get very thin lines especially for script writing (shown in upcoming post!)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was what I posted on my account:

Halfway through the week for my @paperandinkarts #instagramtakeover -- i hope you are viewing my posts there! Featured item today: the ruling pen.

Today's pic on my account is a script/ gestural alphabet made with my ruling pen and blue pearlescent acrylic ink. I find this type of ink flows rather smoothly with this pen, although sometimes I do have to dip it in water. Swipe to see an older design I created (same as PI pic), and also be sure to check out Stories/ highlights!

Post 3 (P&I), Horizon Folded Nib

For my page, I just used the Thank You card (and blank one below)

Added abstract design to black store-bought card.

black India ink

Various India (and other) inks.

From P&I post:  https://www.instagram.com/p/CR1VwnUJoDG/  (Swipe for video, or you can also view on my YouTube channel:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCQ2mEWBlz8

Today’s post is demonstrating a folded nib/folded pen. You can purchase the nib separately if you already have plenty of holders, or purchase the full folded pen (holder included), both available at Paper & Ink. I bought the nib itself along with their e&m penholder.
.
What I love most about folded pens is the freedom you have when lettering, etc. Basically, there are no rules. Just like the Ruling Writer, hold it upright for thin strokes, or angled to get thicker lines. I find it so fun to create with these tools, as I love the abstract results. Swipe to see various samples and a demo video at the end.
.
Pic 1) a blank store-bought thank you card where I added a design
Pic 2) "Create" with black India ink
Pic 3) “kindness” using various colors of India inks
.
Another product I used (shown in first pic) is Ecoline watercolor ink in warm grey (also available at Paper & Ink). I love this tone because it’s not too dark, like regular black ink. It’s also a nice alternative to walnut and India inks.

Post 2 (later that day...)

This was posted later the same day, as it ties in to the orig. RW post (as all these were created with the Ruling Writer). I did the same, but only posted the first pic ("...love.")

New creation just for the takeover week. Used my RW (and India ink) for he green, and white India ink for the lettering. Homemade folded pen and gouache for "love".

Abstract piece again created just for the takeover week. Walnut ink and drop-in colors. (Technique shown in first post) -- 3d gem sticker in middle.

Did this piece a few years ago. Abstract bicycles. Watercolor background and color pencil.

From P&I IG post: https://www.instagram.com/p/CRz5VCOpaz8/

Hello again from Leslie! (@olovey1) To follow-up my previous post about the Ruling Writer, you can also make fun, abstract designs with this tool. Over the years, I’ve created many pieces for friends as well as my home. You can make either a stand-alone piece, or create a fun background for lettering. Swipe to see samples.
.
In the first pic with the quote, the green ink and white lettering are both done using Dr. Martin’s Bombay India ink, which Paper & Ink sells. I love these inks (have been using them for years) as they are waterproof and can be used on a variety of surfaces.
.
For the second photo, I used walnut ink and drop-in colors (like my previous post).
.
The last photo of abstract bicycles is something I created a few years ago that's one of my favorites. (watercolor background with color pencils)

Post 1 (my page; P&I)

All these creations were made with the Ruling Writer.

Link to orig. post:  https://www.instagram.com/p/CRy4b3QjeQr/  (swipe to see video)

Hello all! I'm so excited to be able to finally share... Check out @paperandinkarts this week, as my work will be featured!!! Back in May, I was chosen for their "Instagram Takeover Week", and my first post is up today!

I'll be mostly talking about folded pens, and today's post on their IG page (see story video) is a demo of the Ruling Writer (product link: https://www.paperinkarts.com/rulwrt.html ). This tool is what first got me into the wonderful world of folded pens. Been using it for decades -- So fun and versatile.

Shown here are a few of my samples. Swipe to see a different demo video (the one on the P&I page shows the drop-in color technique.)

*I'll be adding Stories all week with info about each product, then Highlighting at the end.

Thanks again @paperandinkarts and Sarah for selecting me! 😊 #instagramtakeover

Post 1 (P&I Takeover Week)

* For all my posts (8 total), I will be doing 2 separate ones for some, as what I showed on my IG page differed slightly some days than what I had P&I post.

This was Day 1:

Hello! I’m Leslie -- @olovey1 -- and I’m thrilled and honored to be taking over the Paper & Ink Arts Instagram feed for the week. I will be mainly demonstrating folded pens and various products I own that Paper & Ink carries. I hope you enjoy my posts! (Be sure to check out my page as well, as I'll be showing other photos and product info.)
.
Today’s video is featuring the Ruling Writer and walnut ink with drop-in colors (all of which can be purchased at Paper & Ink). For the drop-in colors, make sure you place the ink on a wet spot, so it soaks in and spreads. Just dab it on. If you do not have an ink dropper, you can use a small pointed paint brush. I also use a Q-tip to pick up any excess.
.
Although the paper I used didn't create any, don’t worry about splatters from the Ruling Writer, as it’s meant to do that. This makes for a fun effect with your lettering. The rougher the paper, the more splatter you’ll get. The Ruling Writer is such a fun tool, as it’s very versatile. To get thinner lines, hold it more upright; For broad strokes, at an angle. Swipe to see video.

IG Takeover (for P&I)

Back in May, i was selected for Paper & Ink Arts Instagram Takeover Week. I submitted some of my creations and explained what all I would showcase, if I were chosen.

I was slotted for the week of July 26. Below are just a few of the items I submitted, and the posts to follow are what I created for my week (focusing mainly on folded pens!)

Watercolor, Gouache and Inks. 2019

April, 2020. Did a series of Gratitude pieces.
Watercolor, folded pen and black ink.

This is from one of 10 quotes I did earlier in the year (2021) for the 100 Day Project (did 10 quotes lettered 9 diff. ways).
Ruling Writer and pointed pen.

Cmas Trees -- Left: folded pen; Right: Hiro poster nib
Used green India ink for both

Although not your typical folded pen, I was so proud of how these letters all turned out, esp. the D & F.
Walnut ink & drop-in colors. Coit pen and Speedball C nib.

Paper & Ink Arts Blog!!

So, I came upon this by accident (although I kinda knew already) -- I am featured on the P&I Blog (Under "Calligrapher's Corner")!

https://www.paperinkartsblog.com/category/calligraphers-corner/

How I found out (officially) was through their promotional emails. Back in May (2021), I was chosen for their IG Takeover Week and all my work I submitted was featured the week of July 26 (will make separate post for that).

At the time, I knew I'd be featured on their blog as well, but I kinda forgot so it was a nice surprise when I opened their promo email on Aug. 12, and saw a lot of my posts featured!

Although I never submitted this, it's on my IG page, so Sarah must've grabbed it to use.

So fun to keep scrolling to see another one, and another one!

If you view their blog, it's so nice & lovely how they presented all my work. The layout is great and I just hope it stays up there for a while! (Happy me! So honored!)  😊

Here is the full article for moi!  😁

Folded Pen Fridays (Updating blog)

I'm not sure where I first saw this term (IG maybe? or another blog?) but I use it constantly on IG. Every Friday I try to post something related to folded pens, and after my IG P&I Takeover Week, I decided to maybe try to do that here as well, to keep this blog more updated (depending on who all views it).

So, I may be backtracking a bit at first, posting older pieces mixed in with newer ones. I'm not sure yet, as this blog is such a work-in-progress.

I'd love to get more viewers, just so i don't feel like I'm wasting my time. SO, if you'd like to be an avid follower, please click the "Follow" button! That way, I can see if there are others who are interested.

Thanks and happy lettering!
