Wet Wash Writing

I love this technique and cannot wait to use it for other projects.

I'm just irked that I didn't note which ink and tool I used. I'm assuming Higgins Eternal and a ruling pen maybe. (I know I also tried it with an old marker.) Maybe I'll just have to have a play day experimenting and take notes then!

Squiggly Lines (from Class)

Another project we did was drawing lines based off word prompts/phrases, white on black.
See before pics below for all 3 prompts.

This one was "Tenderness". I love the beginning of it (Left), but not sure why it got "condensed" toward the end. (am planning to crop that off)

3d puff paint and color pencil.

This one was done with Pro White in a FineLiner bottle. I covered with a wash of metallic watercolors (which, at first, smeared the ink, but I kinda liked the effect).

I then flipped it upright, as i love how it was turning out. ("Passion")

Touched it up with color pencils (LOVING it!), and planned to add lettering.

Before pics. Top one is "Puppies Playing". (Then Passion and Tenderness -- you can see my notes in pencil to the Right.)

i added lettering to Tenderness, but not liking (a tad too big, and bad spacing). Planning to redo.

Fun, fun project!

More Marks

Fun little marks from Julie's class (Make Your Mark).

these were so fun, and i love that you could mount each one as a little piece itself.
Higgins Eternal and drop-in Higgins (magenta) with gold metallic w/c

This walnut ink piece started in an upright position, but then I turned it on its side, both ways.

Looks like part of an R.

I love it this way best.
Dropped-in Higgins magenta and gold watercolor.

I also filtered in b&w, just for fun.

*I plan to enlarge/redo and add lettering!

Not diggin' this experimental piece, but still could do something fun with it.

Another online class (Make Your Mark!)

I'm having so much fun with Julie's (Wildman) online classes! These are a few pieces from Make Your Mark. (more to come)
Although they don't look that impressive (these are unfinished), it's still fun experimenting with diff. techniques.

Top piece (black marks) was illustrating the words, "Blaze/ Inferno". (Instead of black ink, I used puff paint.)

Bottom piece was done by first laying a wash of walnut ink, then scoring into the wet paper, using an embossing tool (or whatever you wanted to use for scoring). Then, we'd remove/lift some of the ink, and/or darken in other areas.

Same idea with diff. marks
Can't wait to try this with colorful watercolors!

And again, diff. marks with walnut ink first (vs. a wash), and more scoring.

Love this one. Higgins Eternal ink and a music nib for scoring.

Will update when/if I create something with these!

Alpha Challenge 2020

In early 2020, I wanted to do my own daily lettering alpha challenge on IG. I got a little bit of a late start to it (Started on Jan. 9, finished on Feb. 4) and here is a collage of some of my fave letters (as I sometimes posted more than one creation):

Row 2: f (music nib); G (uncial); h (bleach); i (italic w/split nib); J (RW & color pencil)
Row 3k (italic with marker); L (Dec. Cap); M (fp); foundational n (w/split nib & color pencil)
Row 4O (rw); P (brush markers, metallic); Q (watercolor); italic r; S (fp)

Fun & Funky Letters, II

Another little project from the class: Scribbling.

We were to just scribble on the paper, then find any letterforms and create an alphabet off of that.
(i have yet to make an alphabet)

As you can see from the arrows, I found a cap A and cap B. (I also see a Y, and an M/N)

I took this A and used the patterns technique of breaking up the letter into parts.

Side by Side comparison.

Julie W. class (Fun & Funky letters)

Ever since Zoom classes started online in 2020, i've been wanting to take some (esp. from Julie W!), but would always talk myself out of it. I really don't need anymore classes, or project ideas, as I have plenty to do to fill my time.
But then, this past year, there were a few I decided to try and take, just for fun, and for a sense of connection to the lettering community (in addition to IG). However, my schedule didn't work with the times offered.

I finally decided to sign up for some recorded ones (as a little Cmas present to myself!) and am so glad I did! Even though I already know a lot of the techniques, etc., it's been fun making projects through the guidance of Julie.

Here are some samples so far (I have 1/2 hour left of this class, and more ideas to share).

Thicks & thins, alternating letters. Pilot Parallel slant

one tool, one letter, 10 diff. ways

(added other letters, trying to emulate Julie's work.

one letter, 2 tools, 10 diff. ways
Used my 6mm Pilot and b nib (size 3?)

Use a tool in non-conventional way:
3.8 mm Pilot, on its end

and with script lettering.

I'm having so much fun! Can't wait to show my other creations.

Layers upon Layers! (O Cmas Tree)

From 2020. (i'm transferring over a lot of lettering from an old blog.)

This piece started out as an idea I saw on Pinterest (via Behance) -- posted below:

Final piece. Started with bigger uncial lettering as the base, then added lyrics over (vertically) in pointed pen metallics.

Pinspo piece.

Sketch: I was just experimenting in a notebook. Uncial Lettering and glass pen for script. Didn't like w/red.

First layer.

Started in Nov. of that year. At first I didn't like it b/c I wasn't sure what to do with it (or that it would turn out). So, I set it aside, but then, early Dec, decided to try to finish for our home

I added colors in the counters, but that still seemed blah (no progress pic for that -- rats.), then got the idea to add lyrics in metallic ink, trailing down the tree (like tinsel). Used my pointed pen.

Tried to take pics of diff. angles showing the lettering and overlays.

And here is a video:

More from New Year's past...

Found these in my files and on my old blog.

for 2018. Sketch on bad paper. Never did make it a final piece.

I like this one, but again, didn't make a final finished piece.

And here's a sketch of the top one:
(I think i like my sketch better!)

New Year's past

I must have done these for some snail mail inserts in 2009. Thought I'd share for New Year's!

This was a little "labor of love" as it was a bit challenging to cut the circles, including the 8. (and I'm so mad i messed up the outline of it!)
Hope the recipient enjoyed/appreciated the effort!

some Dancing Cap numbers

And on navy blue paper.

And from 2019. Not the best photo.

Breathe.

I hope this isn't a repeat, but if so, it's a good reminder! 😊

One thing I plan to do more of this coming year....Breathe. (meaning: Be more Mindful, and Meditate daily...Even if that's just 5 minutes of mindful breathing.)
